Background: Environmental challenges including extreme weather events and natural disasters, increasingly disrupt global supply chains, impacting the production and distribution of critical goods and services. Pharmaceutical supply chains are especially vulnerable, as the environmental stressors can damage infrastructure, delay transportation, and limit access to raw materials and the resulting drug shortages have serious implications for healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

Objectives: Responding to increasing threats of extreme weather events and natural disasters, this symposium will provide a venue for pharmacoepidemiologists to explore their role in evaluating the impacts of these challenges on access to medications and medical products. The symposium will also highlight opportunities for collaboration with other organizations to develop strategies that enhance supply chain resilience and ensure continued access to essential medications. Researchers interested in environmental pharmacoepidemiology—particularly those focused on how environmental factors influence healthcare access and delivery—will find this symposium especially relevant.

Description: The symposium will feature presentations from pharmacoepidemiologists on the following topics:
1. Overview of supply chains and drug shortages – Dr. Mina Tadrous (20 min)
2. Environmental stressors and drug shortages – Dr. Soko Setoguchi (20 min)
3. Case examples of specific drug shortages – Drs. Ursula Kirchmayer, Jennifer Lund, and Luciane Lopez (5 min each)
4. Responses to disruptions and building resilient supply chains – Dr. Maarten Lambert (15 min)

Dr. Sean Hennessey will conclude the session with a 5-minute summary and will moderate a discussion between the speakers and the audience.
